How this list was made. We read every hotel’s official room pages in September 2026 and only list what is stated there: room type names, floor area, maximum occupancy, kitchen and laundry equipment, and child rules. Where the official page does not say something — whether two rooms can be connected, whether there is a washer — we write “not stated” rather than guess. We do not take sponsored stays. Prices are deliberately not listed because they change daily; the “See rates” links open a live search so you can compare your own dates.

Kyoto: the biggest connecting apartments in this guide

MIMARU Kyoto Nijo Castle

The largest single booking we found on any official page in either city: the Connecting Japanese Apartment for 10 joins two rooms into 80 m² with four single beds and six futon, for 10 adults plus 4 children. The Connecting Family Apartment is the same 80 m² with four single beds and two bunk beds for 8 + 4. Every room here has both a kitchen and a washer-dryer, which is the combination that makes a week with small children workable. It is eight minutes on foot from Nijojo-mae Station Exit 1 on the Tozai subway line. See rates · official site

MIMARU Kyoto Station

Two minutes from Kyoto Station’s Hachijo exit, so the Shinkansen, the Haruka to Kansai Airport and the bus terminal are all a short walk with a stroller and suitcases. The Connecting Family Apartment is 80 m² for 8 adults + 4 children; the Two-Bedroom Family Suite is also 80 m² for 6 + 2. All rooms have a kitchen, and there is a Pokémon Room (40 m², 4 + 2) and Train View apartments that children tend to remember. There is no in-room washer here — the hotel has coin laundry instead. MIMARU SUITES Kyoto Central

Three minutes from Karasuma Oike Station, in the middle of the subway grid. Every room is a two-bedroom suite of 85 m² with its own kitchen and washer-dryer; the Japanese version takes 6 adults + 2 children on four single beds and two futon, the standard and Premium versions take 4 + 2. MIMARU SUITES Kyoto Shijo

Three minutes from Shijo Station and walking distance to Nishiki Market. The Premium Two-Bedroom Japanese Suite is the biggest room in the building at 98 m² for 6 + 2, and the Three-Bedroom Suite (79 m²) gives six people their own single beds across three rooms — useful with older children who will not share. MIMARU Kyoto Kawaramachi Gojo

Three minutes from Kiyomizu-gojo Station on the Keihan line, which puts Kiyomizu-dera and Gion on the walkable side of the river. Rooms run from the 40 m² Family Apartment (4 + 2) up to the 80 m² Connecting Family Apartment (8 + 4), with a Deluxe One-Bedroom Loft Bed Apartment (60 m², 6 + 2) in between for children who want the top bunk. Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sakaiza and Oakwood Hotel Oike Kyoto

Two options for a smaller family that wants one conventional room. Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sakaiza is a one-minute walk from Exit 9 of Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station; its Deluxe Twin (24 m²) takes 3 and the guest rooms have a kitchenette, a microwave and a washer-dryer. Oakwood Hotel Oike Kyoto is two minutes from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station and its Studio Deluxe (42 m²) takes up to 5 with a fifth guest at extra charge, with a kitchen and in-unit laundry — but note that the kitchen and washer are in the Studio types only, not in the 18–21 m² hotel rooms. Osaka: Shinsaibashi and Namba, two subway stops apart

MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi West

Two minutes from Yotsubashi Station. The Connecting Japanese Apartment for 9 is 81 m² with four single beds, three futon and a bunk bed — 9 adults plus 4 children, the largest room in Osaka in this guide. One step down, the Premium One-Bedroom Japanese Apartment (59 m²) takes 7 + 2 without needing a connecting booking. Kitchens in all rooms; no in-room washer. See rates · official site

MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi Central

The newest of the group — it opened on 1 September 2026 — and two minutes from Shinsaibashi Station on the Midosuji line, which runs straight to Shin-Osaka for the Shinkansen. Every room has a kitchen and a washer-dryer, which none of the other Osaka MIMARUs manage. The Two-Bedroom Family Apartment (60–61 m²) and the Superior One-Bedroom Family Apartment for 6 (57 m²) both take 6 adults + 2 children. See rates · official site

MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi East and Namba Station

Shinsaibashi East is three minutes from Nagahoribashi Station and its Superior Two-Bedroom Japanese Apartment for 7 (58 m²) takes 7 adults + 2 children on two single beds, a bunk bed and three futon — good value for a big group that does not need the connecting layout. MIMARU Osaka Namba Station is four minutes from Nankai Namba (the airport line from Kansai): its Two-Bedroom Family Suite (61 m², 6 + 2) and Two-Bedroom Japanese Apartment (51 m², 6 + 2) both include a washer-dryer, while the smaller apartments do not. MIMARU Osaka Namba North and Citadines Namba Osaka

For a family of four, Namba North (three minutes from Yotsubashi Station) has 39–41 m² Family Apartments and a 37 m² Loft Bed Apartment, all with kitchens; there is no in-room washer. Citadines Namba Osaka is an eight-minute walk from Namba Station and works differently: kitchenettes with an electric HI stove, microwave and cookware in all apartments, a Two-Bedroom of 63 m² for 4 (a fifth guest is chargeable), a children’s play area and baby cribs on request. Hotel Universal Port

The exception in this guide: no kitchen is stated, but the Party Room is 40 m² for up to 6, with two sets of 90 cm bunk beds and two 105 cm sofa beds added from five guests, a sunken kotatsu-style table and two sinks. The hotel states that for safety only the bottom bunk may be used when co-sleeping: up to 2 children can share with a parent in a room of 4, up to 3 in a room of 5 and up to 4 in a room of 6. Child policies worth knowing before you book

“Children” means “no bed”. MIMARU states that up to 2 children aged 6 or under at check-in are not counted towards the adult capacity and may share a bed with an adult. A seventh birthday moves a child into the adult count, which can change which room you need.
Cribs and bed guards are free but limited. MIMARU provides free baby cribs for infants aged 2 and under and lends bed guards at no cost, but says availability is limited and there are age restrictions — contact the property you are booking in advance. Citadines Namba Osaka lists a baby crib on request.
Apartment is not Suite at MIMARU. Whether a washer-dryer is in the room depends on the room name, not the hotel: at Osaka Namba Station the two-bedroom types have one and the smaller apartments do not; Kyoto Station and Kawaramachi Gojo have none at all.
Connecting rooms: book the named type. Kyoto Nijo Castle, Kyoto Station, Kyoto Kawaramachi Gojo and Osaka Shinsaibashi West sell “Connecting…” as a room type, so the layout is guaranteed. Everywhere else in this guide it is not stated on the official page, so do not rely on it.
Bunk beds have their own rules. Hotel Universal Port allows co-sleeping only on the bottom bunk. If your children are small, count the bottom bunks, not the beds.

Do you really need a kitchen in Kansai?

Kyoto and Osaka are both easy places to eat out with children, so the honest answer is: it depends on the ages. With a baby on formula or purées, a toddler who eats at 5pm, or anyone with a food allergy, being able to boil pasta, heat rice from the convenience store and wash bottles is what turns evenings into a routine — and Osaka’s supermarkets under Shinsaibashi and Namba make it trivial (see our guides to konbini snacks for picky eaters and food allergies in Japan). The second thing parents say they would not give up is a washer in the room, because it halves what you pack — and in this guide only five properties have one in every room. If you are staying under a week and eating out every night, a conventional room such as Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sakaiza’s is simpler.

Kyoto or Osaka as a base for a family?

Osaka has more large apartment rooms clustered around two subway hubs (Shinsaibashi and Namba) and is the easier base for Universal Studios Japan and day trips to Nara and Kobe. Kyoto has the bigger connecting apartments (up to 10 adults plus 4 children at Nijo Castle) and puts temples and the Arashiyama side of the city within a short bus or train ride. The two are about 15 minutes apart by Shinkansen, so many families split the week.
